MAYOR: Two-term incumbent. Council seats drawn so richer districts hold majority despite poorer districts having more residents.
SCHOOL DISTRICT: Corbin City Public Schools, ~14,000 K–12 students
UNIVERSITY: Corbin State University, ~12,000 undergrad/grad students
MEDIAN INCOME: ~$38,000 citywide — but that hides a lot.
1891: Corbin Steel & Shipping founded on the river mouth.
1900s–1950s: Boom years. Yards and Ridgeline built up as worker housing.
1974: The mill closes for good. No warning, no replacement.
1976–1989: Money moves up the hill. Crestwood and Foxrun grow; Yards and Ridgeline left with aging buildings and no reinvestment.
1980s–90s: Kids turn warehouses into rehearsal spaces. Street crews harden into gangs as jobs vanish.
1994: Downtown high school shuts down. All students consolidated into the old steel mill — "Corbin High" is born.
2004 (PRESENT): No state recognizes gay relationships legally. Being outed can end a life overnight. That's the weather.

Renting, not owning, is the norm. The birthplace of the city's hip-hop and dance scene — and also home turf to the Vine Street crew, the closest thing the Yards has to organized muscle, running everything from corner sales to who's "allowed" to throw a party in an empty warehouse without paying up first.

Its own scene, its own turf, and its own crew — the Dockline — who've been at odds with Vine Street for years over turf, respect, and who actually "started" half the culture everybody claims credit for.

Working and middle class. Football and Old Stone Baptist run the social calendar here — not everyone buys into either, but almost everyone knows better than to say so too loudly.

Old and new money both. Not everyone up here is old money — there are renters and second-income families priced-in but never quite belonging, which is its own kind of pressure.

City workers, university-adjacent renters, the diner and the library and city hall — the one part of the city that doesn't belong to any single crew or clique.
Grew out of the same abandoned-building culture that built the Depot. Some of its oldest members were just dancers once, before there was nothing else left around to make money doing. Not everyone in the Yards runs with them — but everyone in the Yards knows exactly who does.
Smaller, tighter, more insular, born out of the same collapse of dock jobs that hit Ridgeline in the 80s. The rivalry with Vine Street flares up over turf, respect, or nothing at all, depending on the year.
Both crews recruit young. A talented dancer or skater from either neighborhood can get pulled toward crew life for protection or money long before he's old enough to really understand what he's agreeing to. Getting in is easy. Getting out is the part nobody talks about.
Neither Foxrun nor Crestwood has anything like it — which is exactly why kids from those neighborhoods tend to either romanticize it from a safe distance or have no idea it's real at all.
FOUNDED: 1921 as a teachers' college, expanded into a full state university after WWII.
POP: ~12,000 undergrad and grad students.
LOCATION: Sits deliberately between Downtown and Crestwood Heights, on land that used to belong to the old Port Authority.
LOOK: The original 1921 core is red-brick, ivy-covered. The athletics complex is newer — glass and steel, funded almost entirely by boosters. Greek Row is a literal street of mansion-sized houses, visibly nicer than anything else on campus.
IRONCLADS: Navy and rust-orange (shipbuilding/steel nod). Home games at Founders Stadium are the single biggest recurring event on campus all fall. The roster is one of the only places a legacy kid and a scholarship kid share a locker room — the social gap doesn't disappear once the pads come off, it just goes quiet.
The team's best player is protected exactly as long as he's producing. The moment a rumor starts about him, nothing gets said out loud — he just stops getting included. Left off the group chain, off the pregame plans, off the group chat, with no confrontation and no explanation.
A guy who's both on aid and suspected of being gay gets it from two directions — mocked for the money first, then quietly cut off socially the moment the second rumor starts, and there's no version of campus where those two things don't compound.
IronBoard — a free, homemade message board barely moderated. Used for gossip, hookup confessions, callouts, rumors, and outings — sometimes by name. Everybody checks it, nobody admits how often. It's the actual reason nothing on this campus stays a secret for long.
the Line: The rail divide splitting the city.
cross the Line: Going up the hill or down south. Always at least a little loaded.
Hill kid: What Yards/Ridgeline crews call anyone from Crestwood, thrown with an eye-roll built in.
South kid: What Hill/Foxrun kids call anyone from the Yards or Ridgeline back.
battle-tested: Earned real respect through an actual circle, not just talk.
iced: Frozen out of a crew or a friend group all at once, no warning.
buffed: Literally what happens when the city paints over a mural at Low Bridge; used as a dig for someone whose reputation just got quietly erased.
corner talk: Gossip moving through the neighborhood faster than anything official could.
the Row: Greek Row.
Norther: A cutting nickname for anyone living in North Hall; Row kids use it to make it obvious in one word who's on aid and who isn't.
legacy: A student whose family's attended for generations, worn like it's owed to them rather than earned.
trust baby: What Norther kids call the Row crowd back, once they're out of earshot.
the Board: IronBoard, the forum.
scrapped: Getting torn apart in a Board thread — dragged through it by name and left in pieces, like scrap off the line.
